Another general blackout in Cuba? Entire days without electricity and Cubans are questioning

Since yesterday, Cubans have been wondering if they are in the midst of another general blackout in Cuba, as they have been without electricity for several days in many areas of the country and the rumor was activated from town to town, multiplied by social networks.

Many users from Pinar del Río came to our newsroom asking if this was the new reality and why they had to spend up to 26 hours without a few minutes of electric current. In rural towns of Villa Clara, such as Jutiero and surrounding areas, they also wondered if the National Electric System (SEN) was down again.

The reality is that it is not, up to this minute. The SEN continues to be activated, although with multiple deficiencies, especially outside Havana, since in the capital, blackouts last only a few hours, while in the provinces, there are outages of more than 24 hours, with barely one hour of electricity.

Cuba is currently undergoing a serious energy crisis due to multiple breakdowns, scheduled maintenance and fuel supply problems that significantly reduce the country's electricity generation capacity.

This situation generates prolonged power outages in several provinces, affecting the daily life of citizens and limiting the operation of key sectors.

Breakdowns and maintenance in Thermoelectric Power Plants. No general blackout in Cuba

Currently, two key units of the national power system are out of service due to failures:

  • Nuevitas CTE Unit 5
  • CTE Felton Unit 2

In addition, several units are undergoing maintenance, which further reduces generation capacity:

  • Unit 6 of CTE Mariel
  • CTE Unit 2 Santa Cruz
  • Cienfuegos CTE Units 3 and 4
  • CTE Unit 5 Renté

The limitations thermal power plants have been out of service, at least until yesterday, 375 MWemissions, contributing to the generation deficit.

In addition, the lack of fuel has led to the shutdown of important distributed generation plants, which represents 966 MW less in the national power system. Among the facilities affected were:

  • 85 distributed generation plants (514 MW).
  • Mariel fuel plant (116 MW).
  • Moa fuel plant (147 MW).
  • Patana de Regla (54 MW).
  • 8 engines at Patana de Melones (135 MW).

Another week of little light in Cuba: executive explains causes of "new" electricity crisis

With more than 1,000 MW affected by breakdowns, maintenance and lack of fuel, the electricity crisis in Cuba continues to worsen.

The main causes of this crisis include frequent breakdowns in thermoelectric power plants, prolonged maintenance and a marked shortage of fuel.

The obsolescence of the energy infrastructure and the lack of investment in maintenance have aggravated the situation, leaving the national electricity system on the verge of collapse. There has been no general blackout so far, but may well happen.
