Earthquake in the Caribbean felt in the west and center of Cuba

A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 7.3 shook the Caribbean on the afternoon of February 8, 2025, with its epicenter in northern Honduras, and was felt in several Cuban provinces, including Havana, Pinar del Río, Mayabeque, Matanzas, Cienfuegos, and Isla de la Juventud.

According to specialist Gilberto Sánchez from the National Seismological Research Center of Cuba, the tremor was widely reported on social media by residents of the affected areas.

Especially in tall buildings in Havana and Pinar del Río, there were reports of several seconds of shaking.

In Honduras, the earthquake was also felt strongly, but so far no material damages or victims have been reported, according to the Permanent Contingencies Commission (Copeco).

The phenomenon was felt for approximately 15 seconds, according to witnesses in Honduras and the Caribbean.

The authorities will continue assessing the situation, although so far there are no reports of damage in Cuba or the affected regions.

The population is advised to stay informed and follow the instructions of official agencies.
