The United States Postal Service (USPS) announced the temporary suspension of all packages coming from China and Hong Kong, including purchases from international shopping sites like Shein and Temu.
The measure, which came into effect immediately, according to the press local, and will remain "until further notice," it will not affect letters and large envelopes ("flats") sent from those regions.
This decision comes after the signing of executive orders by former President Donald Trump, imposing new tariffs on China, Mexico and Canada.
Although the imposition of a 25% tariff on Canada and Mexico was postponed for 30 days, goods from China will continue to be subject to a 10% tax, according to data.
One of the measures adopted eliminates the trade loophole known as "de minimis," which allowed exporters to send packages with a value under 800 dollars without paying taxes.
Chinese e-commerce companies like Shein and Temu from PDD Holdings benefited from this exemption to keep prices low and avoid tariffs.
Shein, Temu, affected by new measure in the United States
The temporary suspension by the USPS could significantly affect American consumers who rely on shipments from China and Hong Kong, as well as retailers who use this shipping route to stock affordable products.
It is very likely that Americans will have trouble shopping during these weeks at Shein y Temu and receive their orders on time.
Without a doubt, this measure will impact online shopping platforms like Shein and Temu, very popular among young people in the United States for their offer of affordable clothing and other products, which are usually shipped directly from China.
At the time of publishing this note, it has not yet been indicated when the service for receiving packages from stores in China, such as Temu and Shein, which are in high demand in the United States, will resume.
