The estadísticas del Departamento de Agricultura from the United States show that Cuba purchased 30,241.00 USD in sugar last June from American companies. The data was verified through the Consejo Económico y Comercial EE.UU.-Cuba (USCTEC).

After the close of the last sugar harvest, the Island was forced to enter the market and secure these products. By the way, the most recent campaign fell far short of the forecasts made by experts from the AZCUBA Group. Production was below the 600,000 tons covering domestic demand and the 400,000 tons of the export commitment to China.

Contra la pared

This is neither the first nor the only occasion on which Cuba has gone to the market to import sugar. Both domestic demand and supply to tourism have been covered in recent years with sugar from France and Colombia. In all cases, national production has not met commitments and importing has been necessary.

Finally, USCTEC revealed that the leading imported product is frozen chicken. In June, purchases amounted to 32.8 million dollars, a figure that showed an increase of 44.

  1. To whom was it sold, to the state or to non-governmental institutions? That is violating the law on trade with the enemy, and that is why third parties have been sanctioned.

  2. I believe the article lacks accuracy when it talks about a production of less than 600 tons. Any small plant produces that amount in a week, and I also don't think China would charter a ship, no matter how small, to transport 400 tons. Check those figures, they are wrong.
