According to police reports, the homes were occupied not only by young people but also by older adults and minors.
A group of migrants, including Cubans, was arrested in Cancún after illegally occupying several luxury apartments in an exclusive residential area. The police suspect that they might be part of a larger network dedicated to invading vacant properties.
They occupied seven uninhabited apartments
According to reports from local media, the migrants — mostly Cubans and Argentinians — had settled since March 22 in at least seven apartments in the residential area known as Pok Ta Pok, also called Green 16. These apartments remained empty because their owners were not in the country.
Mexican authorities reported that the accesses were opened with a master key, suggesting the involvement of a person familiar with the place and with access to privileged information. Their whereabouts are unknown so far.
Among the occupants were children and elderly people
Initial investigations reveal that the homes were inhabited by several families, including elderly people and minors. Not all were found during the police operation, which reinforces suspicions of a possible migrant trafficking network or "coyotes" facilitating this type of occupation.
Además, cuatro mujeres mexicanas fueron detenidas por obstaculizar la acción policial. Tienen entre 26 y 62 años y se enfrentan a cargos por alterar el orden público, aunque podrían quedar en libertad bajo fianza en los próximos días.
No response from the National Institute of Migration
Los migrantes cubanos y argentinos arrestados aún no han sido procesados por el Instituto Nacional de Migración (INM). Por ahora, su situación legal en México es incierta, y podrían enfrentar deportación. En casos anteriores, como uno ocurrido en julio del año pasado, migrantes cubanos fueron liberados por falta de pruebas, incluso tras ser acusados de delitos graves como secuestro.
Balseros también llegan a Cancún
No es la primera vez que migrantes cubanos protagonizan titulares en Cancún. El 24 de diciembre pasado, al menos 15 balseros llegaron a la ciudad en una embarcación precaria. Desembarcaron cerca del hotel Continental, en Playa Caracol, y fueron detenidos por la Marina mexicana, que los entregó al INM.
Estos casos reflejan el aumento del flujo migratorio cubano a través de México, impulsado por la aguda crisis económica en la isla. Cancún se ha convertido en un punto frecuente de llegada, tanto por mar como por aire, para quienes buscan llegar eventualmente a Estados Unidos.
Crece la preocupación por redes ilegales
Las autoridades mexicanas advierten que detrás de estos hechos podrían estar operando redes de tráfico de personas. A pesar de algunas detenciones, no se han implementado acciones efectivas para desmantelar estas estructuras, lo que pone en riesgo la seguridad de migrantes y residentes.
