"The well-known inconveniences caused by power outages in homes on the island are compounded by another alarming reality: Power cuts, especially at night, could be contributing to an increase in accidents on the streets of the island."
"And it is that the lack of electricity in key intersections combined with reckless driving, and the absence of law enforcement agents in high-risk areas, are the perfect breeding ground for an accident to occur."
"Several accidents have been reported in different parts of the country in the last few hours through social media. One of the incidents occurred at the intersection of 23 and 26, in El Vedado, Havana, at the well-known spot called "Danube's corner"."
While in this case, official details about the incident have not been published, witnesses claim that the accident took place last night and some neighbors warn that at the time of the event the traffic lights were not working, precisely due to the power outage.
"It's a very dangerous corner," commented a resident of the area on social media. While another witness stated, "Yesterday the traffic lights at that intersection were not working." The situation is even more alarming when considering that multiple incidents have been previously reported at that exact point. At the moment, it is not known if there are any injured or deceased individuals."
"Chaos at the traffic lights on Malecón"
"In recent months, Cuba has had to mourn significant losses in traffic accidents, perhaps the most well-known being that of the popular singer Paulito FG."
Beyond the causes of these events, which may be diverse, lies a reality, the poor state of the roads and traffic infrastructure. To make matters worse, some explain that there are times when all the traffic lights at the intersections of the Malecón in Havana remain without power, leading to chaotic traffic scenes. And what's even worse: residents complain that, despite the situation, there is no police presence to regulate traffic flow.
The lack of traffic police officers at critical points, along with the neglect of road infrastructure, has been harshly criticized by the population. "They don't want tragedies to happen afterwards," lamented a woman from Havana, to which another user replied: "It's not that they want to... much less do they care."
"Multiple car crash in Matanzas"
"In the western part as well, but specifically in the Peñas Altas area in Matanzas, another traffic accident was reported, apparently without serious injuries. However, images shared on social media show considerable material damage. What stands out here is that apparently an ambulance may have been involved, although the versions of what happened are contradictory."
"While some accuse private vehicle drivers of not yielding, others blame the emergency vehicle driver for 'unjustified speeding'."
"The ambulance was without brakes and ran the red light," said a witness. Another added, "How many times have we seen ambulances stopping to buy ice cream while they were using their sirens."
"Unfortunately, now we have one less ambulance," commented a user with a mix of humor and resignation, as the sad situation that the public health system on the island is going through is well known."
