The Spanish chain Axel Hotels and the Gaviota Group announced that after its upcoming reopening, the Hotel Telégrafo will become the first tourist facility for the LGBTQ+ community in Havana.
Both parties disseminated the information through an official statement on their social media. The property, located at the central intersection of Prado and Neptuno in the capital, has been undergoing maintenance since mid-2020.
According to the statements made by Silvia Pérez, Director of Communication and Marketing at Axel, the facilities sponsored by this chain are spaces designed "by and for the LGBTQI+ community." She also added that these facilities welcome anyone from different parts of the world.
They are spaces where freedom and respect are the most important values, and inclusion and diversity are promoted there, emphasized the executive.
Likewise, Ana Belkis Perdomo, head of the Research and Teaching Department at the National Center for Sexual Education of Cuba (CENESEX), pointed out that this entity and the management of the Telégrafo Hotel organize training activities. Apparently, awareness workshops are being prepared for the hotel staff to help improve the quality of services.
El Telégrafo will not be the first Cuban hotel dedicated to the LGBTQ+ community. The Gran Muthu Rainbow, located in Cayo Guillermo, has been operational for several years.
On the other hand, the statement also indicates that the official reopening date will depend on the evolution of the epidemiological conditions related to COVID-19. It will also depend on the resumption of regular flights and the consequent reactivation of tourism activity.

It is disrespectful that someone prioritized restarting a Telegrapho hotel... there are many needs to prioritize in the eastern provinces over other needs. But who is fooling whom with such a barbarity like that... grandson of which government official is in charge of this? For God's sake, it's normal for the people to be so upset and with the eyes of the world upon us. Fidel, our father, taught us to add, subtract, think... enough, please. Who gave the permission? Ignorance for their convenience, that's what it is. They should focus on more important things. What a disappointment to have to agree with many in the eyes of the world.
