This Wednesday, the repatriation of more than 800 migrants from Haiti who sank last week off the northern coast of Villa Clara began.
This was announced on Facebook by the Citizen Portal "I am Villa Clara".
In accordance with international commitments on migration, of which Cuba is a part, the safe and voluntary return of more than 800 Haitian migrants began, who arrived on a vessel to the north of Villa Clara eight days ago.
According to provincial authorities, Haitian migrants received food and medical assistance throughout their stay in Cuba. During this period, they were at a tourist facility in Corralillo, known as a campground, which typically offers recreational services at lower prices than hotels.
The return to their homeland is by air. Thus, the first flight to Haiti departed from Abel Santamaría International Airport. Other flights will follow until all migrants are repatriated.
A wrong destination
On May 24th, a stir was caused in the coastal town of Caibarién by the proximity of a vessel carrying over 800 Haitians on board. Their destination was the United States, but the ship's captain abandoned it after stealing all the migrants' cell phones.
After hours adrift, the boat managed to signal with a flashlight and request help near Cuban shores. The Cuban Coast Guard rescued them and provided first aid. Many migrants were suffering from severe dehydration.
Official journalists mentioned on social media that some Haitians would have liked to stay in Cuba. However, no news outlet has referenced the matter.
There is no clarity regarding the possibilities a migrant has in these circumstances to request asylum or refuge and thus stay in Cuba.
