Attention: Delta strain of covid-19 on the rise in Havana

According to the weekly newspaper "Tribuna de La Habana", the Temporary Working Group of this Cuban city reported that the Delta strain of covid-19 is opening space and increasing considerably in the capital.

According to this information Dr. Emilio Delgado Iznaga, provincial director of health in that territory explained that the same is 64 times more infectious than the known Alfa and increases twice the possibility that the patient will have to be hospitalized.

As a result, increased sanitary surveillance in the capital's neighborhoods and attention to the control of active outbreaks were oriented. Officials also emphasized that the so-called "sanitary intervention" must be carried out efficiently. Following this alarming news, the governor, Luis Antonio Torres Iríbar, indicated that all suspects should be admitted for a PCR test.

Torres Iríbar called attention and asked for explanations to the authorities of the capital municipalities of Playa, East Havana, Guanabacoa, Diez de Octubre, Marianao and La Lisa, after the increase of positive cases compared to previous weeks. Likewise, the territories of Regla and Centro Habana were criticized for not complying with the planned percentage of investigations in the community.

"Well, many of us already knew that, or rather, we imagined it. Unfortunately we let that strain enter the country instead of closing the border and now many will pay the consequences", was one of the comments made by Cuban users on the matter. Another one wondered if the Cuban vaccine candidate, Abdala, was effective against this Delta variant.

On this issue, some international media have echoed the efficiency or not of some foreign vaccines against this more contagious and lethal strain. For example, the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine is very effective against the initially called "Indian variant" of about 90%. AstraZeneca is also highly effective. As for Janssen and Moderna, although there are still no studies of effectiveness against this particular variant, those of Moderna state that it is very effective.

Regarding Havana, Torres Iríbar said that care must be taken to ensure that things are done well in each neighborhood and with the rigor that this tense moment demands. He added that this was not the time to admit irresponsibility.

  1. I have some doubts. This infectious disease does not comply with Koch's first postulate ("The pathogenic agent must be present in sick individuals and absent in healthy ones") because there are "asymptomatic" individuals: they have the pathogenic agent, but they are not sick. Nor does Covid 19 satisfy the concept of acquired immunity, because, apparently, the immune memory does not work with it: a person who has had this disease can be re-infected with the same virus. Have his antibodies disappeared?
Nor does it comply with Farr's Law: the incidence of any epidemic follows one (and only one) normal distribution (Gaussian bell). If you look at the incidence curves of Covid 19 in Cuba or the USA, for example, you will see that they do not follow a normal distribution. The probabilistic distribution that they most resemble to me is what is known in marketing as the Product Life Cycle (see Wikipedia). For example, in the US: first the "product launch", then two "updates" and finally (before vaccinations) three "relaunches".
He buscado en la web hasta el agotamiento respuesta a estas dudas, pero en vano. No entiendo nada de nada. Si alguien pudiera explicarme…
Thank you in advance and best regards from Cuba.

  2. As long as there are endless lines in certain stores because there are many that are out of stock, the contagions will continue to rise even though the population is quite undisciplined. Stock all the stores and mini stores where the population does not have to move so much to look for food.

  3. In my opinion, what they should do is to supply more and better the stores where the people go to buy their daily food and other necessities, as long as only one store is supplied in each municipality, the lines will continue and the crowds will continue, so what can we talk about if we are tired of complaining and nothing happens, everything goes from bad to worse.
