A new chapter in the unusual case of the Canadian tourist who died in Varadero last year, and it was now discovered that he was buried in Russia.
According to Canadian authorities, Faraj Allah Jarjour, 68 years old, has been mistakenly buried in Russia after his death while enjoying his vacation in Varadero, Cuba, last March.
A confusion in the repatriation processes by the Cuban authorities caused Jarjour's body to be sent to Russia, while another Russian citizen's body, 20 years younger than the Canadian, was repatriated to Canada. It was Faraj's own family who noticed the confusion and reported it to the international media.
After the relevant investigations, it was confirmed that the Canadian's body had been buried in a cemetery outside of Moscow, the Russian capital.
The Canadian authorities contacted the Jarjour family to inform them of the situation and are carrying out the necessary procedures to exhumate Faraj's body and repatriate it to Canada, where he will be able to receive a proper burial alongside his loved ones.
Cuba apologizes for failed repatriation and burial of Canadian tourist in Russia
After the incident with the corpse of the tourist who died in Varadero, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla lamented this week the "unfortunate incident" that occurred with the repatriation of the remains of Faraj Allah Jarjour, who died last March while enjoying his vacation at the mentioned resort.
"Cuban authorities are investigating the incident to clarify it. I conveyed apologies and heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased, the diplomat stated on the social network X.
Faraj Allah Jarjour's vacation in Cuba ended in an unexpected tragedy. After his passing on the island, his family was expecting to give him the last farewell in Canada However, upon receiving the coffin, a terrible reality struck them: inside lay the body of a completely unknown man.
Now they wait, patiently, for the body of the deceased father in Varadero to be returned to them.
