Breaking News in Cuba. According to official sources, Russia will build a new power generation unit in Mayabeque, in the western part of the island, to modernize Cuba's National Electric System (SEN). More details shortly.
Russia continues to strengthen its cooperation with Cuba in the energy sector, and one of the priority projects in its collaboration schedule is the modernization and expansion of the electricity generation capacity on the island.
In this regard, the construction of a new generation unit in the province of Mayabeque stands out, as part of a joint effort to improve Cuba's National Electric System (SEN), he expanded in his profile of Facebook, the pro-government reporter Lázaro Manuel Alonso.
The project will include the modernization of three units of 100 MW each and the installation of a new 200 MW block, all backed by a Russian loan.
The plant that will house this new infrastructure will be the Ernesto Guevara de la Serna Thermoelectric Power Plant (CTE), located in the municipality of Santa Cruz del Norte, Mayabeque. Additionally, the rehabilitation of one of its existing units will be carried out.
Russia and the commissioning of a power generation unit in Mayabeque
The Russian ambassador to Cuba, Víktor Koronelli, highlighted the importance, according to the official source, of this initiative during his visit to the Mayabeque province, emphasizing that the restoration and strengthening of the Cuban National Electric System is a strategic priority for his country.
During his tour of the project area, which is being carried out in Boca de Jaruco, Koronelli was accompanied by local authorities, such as the first secretary of the Provincial Committee of the Party in Mayabeque, Yuniaski Crespo Baquero, and the governor Manuel Aguiar Lamas.
Officials specified that this project will not only benefit Cuba's electricity generation capacity but also strengthen the bilateral relationship between Russia and Cuba in the energy sector.
Russia has also provided support in the form of credits for the purchase of fuels and components necessary for the repair of equipment and devices within Cuban energy infrastructures.
