Nearly half of Cuba will be without power this Saturday night

Approximately 47% from Cuba could experience blackouts during peak hours on April 12, 2025, if the forecasts from the Cuban Electric Union (UNE) hold true.

Below is the "note" Official report on the status of the National Electric System (SEN) – April 12, 2025.

UNE information

Yesterday, the service began to be affected at 05:04 in the morning and remained affected throughout the early morning today. The maximum impact yesterday was 1604 MW at 20:20, coinciding with the peak demand time, higher than planned due to demand exceeding the estimate.

The energy production of the 8 new photovoltaic solar parks was 895 MWh.

Current state of the SEN

At 7:00 a.m., the availability of the SEN was 1810, while the demand reached 2260 MW, causing an impact of 473 MW. By noon, an impact of 750 MW is estimated.

Main incidents

• Breakdown: Unit 1 of the Santa Cruz CTE and Unit 2 of the Felton CTE.
• Maintenance: Unit 2 of the Santa Cruz CTE, Units 3 and 4 of the Cienfuegos CTE, and Unit 5 of the Renté CTE.
• Thermal limitations: 391 MW out of service.
• Problems due to fuel shortage:
• 81 distributed generation plants (553 MW).
• Additionally, 107 MW are unavailable due to lack of lubricants.

Peak hour forecast

The peak is estimated to have an availability of 1810 MW and a maximum demand of 3300 MW, resulting in a deficit of 1490 MW. If the predicted conditions persist, an impact of 1560 MW is forecasted at this time.
