Cuban baseball celebrated a historic milestone this Wednesday when Frederich Cepeda, an emblematic player from Sancti Spíritus, became the new all-time hits leader in Cuban baseball. With a total of 2503 hits, Cepeda surpassed the previous record and established himself as one of the living legends of the sport on the island.
The historic hit came during the game between Ciego de Ávila and Granma, in which his team made a comeback in the ninth inning to win 5-4. The outfielder and designated hitter got his first hit of the day in his first at-bat, setting the final record.
The hard part was reaching 2,500
After the game, Cepeda offered exclusive declarations to journalist Rosa María Torres Montalbán, in which she expressed her excitement and pride for the achievement reached.
Well, yesterday I tied the record and today it was broken in the first at-bat. Honestly, as I've always said, the hard part was reaching 2,500, said the star player.
Regarding the possibility of breaking the record, Cepeda was confident that it was only a matter of time: "At any moment I could do it because there was enough time and games to achieve it. The three hits I was missing could come at any time," he assured.
A special dedication
Beyond the athletic achievement, Cepeda shared that this accomplishment has a very special meaning in his personal life: "Today is my dad's birthday, who was the one who started this long story. I really dedicate it to him and to all the people who have supported me and have been followers," he expressed.
A record in the Cuban Baseball Elite League
Cepeda's record comes during the third edition of the Cuban Baseball Elite League, where teams continue their fight for the championship. On the day Cepeda made history, Pinar del Río defeated Las Tunas 6-2, while Santiago de Cuba beat Industriales 11-9 in a home run festival.
The milestone achieved by Cepeda not only consolidates his legacy in Cuban baseball but also highlights the quality and resilience of a player who has managed to stay at the top of the sport for decades.
