La Consejería de Trabajo de España en Cuba, que asiste a la comunidad en cuestiones laborales, migratorias y de seguridad social, ha publicado un reciente mensaje sobre las licencias de conducción.
Are you Spanish, residing in Cuba, and planning to move your residence to Spain? preguntaron from the social network X (formerly Twitter).
According to the provided details, "if you obtained your driver's license in Cuba, it is not valid for driving in Spain because there is no agreement between the two countries.
The notice refers to the official information from the Directorate General of Traffic, where guidelines are provided for people who wish to drive with a foreign license in Spain.
«Antes de conducir en nuestro país debes informarte si tu permiso de conducir es válido para conducir en España, debes canjearlo o si necesitas obtener el Permiso Internacional», refiere la citada web.
In this regard, they clarify that permits issued in countries of the European Union and the European Economic Area (Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway) are fully valid for driving in Spain, as long as they are current.
However, foreigners coming from a country outside the European Union or the European Economic Area (Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway) are advised to obtain an international permit in their country before traveling to Spain.
PERMISO INTERNACIONAL DE CONDUCCIÓN
According to the DGT, the International Permit is "a permit issued and accepted in virtually all countries in the world, and it is valid for one year" (Cuba is a signatory).
It is a supplementary permit, so whenever you go to use it, you must accompany it with your passport and your foreign driver's license, they point out.
They also state that it consists of a gray cover or cardboard in the form of a triptych and 16 pages, where, in different languages (Spanish, German, English, French, Italian, Portuguese, Arabic, and Russian), the personal data of the holder and the permits they possess are listed.
They are also valid for handling the following permits from other countries in Spain:
- Permits written in Spanish or accompanied by an official translation of the same.
- They are issued in accordance with Annex 9 of the Geneva Convention, or Annex 6 of the Vienna Convention, or that differ from these models only in the adoption or omission of non-essential signatures.
In these cases, they will be considered valid as long as these conditions are met:
- Que no haya pasado el plazo de seis meses, como máximo, contados desde que hayas adquirido la residencia normal en España.
- The driving license is valid.
- El titular tenga la edad requerida en España para la obtención de un permiso español equivalente.

I find it absurd that so many Latin American countries are allowed to homologate their driving licenses in Spain and Cuba's is not. The code applied on the island has an international basis and should be accepted at least with a category B. Especially if they are people with more than 10 years of experience.
I am Cuban Spanish, living in Spain, I have all the driving licenses from Cuba, here in Spain I am given the opportunity to work as a bus driver and my licenses are not recognized. If in Cuba I get an international license, could I drive in Spain, at least with the B license?
