The revocation of humanitarian parole for Cubans, Venezuelans, Nicaraguans, and Haitians could put those who entered the United States under this benefit at risk of deportation.
According to an email from ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) cited by Univisión Miami, people who entered through an entry port, whether by border or airport, could have their status canceled.
ICE officers are instructed to put these people through expedited renewal processes," the document states. This means that affected migrants would receive a notification to appear before immigration authorities and, depending on their case, could be subject to immediate deportation.
How will these migrants be notified?
The notification process would be carried out through various means. "They make a call to your phone, email, or text message," explained lawyer Rosaly Chaviano Monteagudo. However, so far, there is no set date for the suspension of these paroles for beneficiaries from Cuba, Nicaragua, Venezuela, and Haiti.
The revocation of the benefit will depend on the government's ability to stop and interview the affected individuals. "They have to conduct a brief interview first, and if that person says they are afraid to return to their country, then they have to conduct a credible interview," the lawyer explained.
Those who entered through the CBP One program and do not have an asylum application or some immigration benefit pending could be at risk of being deported without a detailed process. Additionally, migrants protected by the Convention Against Torture could be sent to a third country instead of being returned to their country of origin. "If there is a third country that accepts them, they will be sent there," said Chaviano Monteagudo.
As part of the humanitarian parole reactivation request, this measure is expected to be reconsidered by the Department of Homeland Security. However, so far, there is no exact date for a possible decision. Media outlets have indicated that this change could be implemented in mid-March.
