The U.S. Embassy in Cuba informed that both countries met with the objective of "reviewing the migratory agreements".
Amid a climate of uncertainty about the future of U.S. immigration policies, representatives of both countries have met in Havana to review the current Migration Agreements.
This meeting comes as former President Donald Trump prepares to assume the presidency again in January 2025, after promising a reversal of current immigration measures pushed by the Biden administration.
Among his promises are the elimination of humanitarian parole and the use of the CBP One application as a means of legal entry into the United States, generating concern among thousands of Cubans seeking alternatives for migration.
During the meeting, U.S. and Cuban officials discussed the results of joint actions to reduce irregular migration from the island.
According to an official statement, the U.S. delegation highlighted the progress made in this area, especially in the reduction of illegal crossings by both land and sea. Brian A. Nichols, Assistant Secretary for Western Hemisphere Affairs, said:
"We have achieved significant successes in curbing irregular Cuban migration by sea and land routes, thanks to the offer of legal and safe alternatives."
The Biden administration, through such agreements, has sought to encourage legal migration channels to reduce the dangers associated with irregular crossings.
End of parole and CBP One?
However, Trump's arrival in the White House threatens to dismantle these initiatives, which could aggravate the migration situation in the region.
Cubans, in particular, face an uncertain scenario, as many of the current measures could be rendered ineffective.
The political context has also influenced expectations for bilateral negotiations. While Cuba seeks to maintain cooperation channels to control migratory flows, the United States is evaluating new strategies that could redefine its relationship with the island.
Although the results of the meeting have not been detailed, both governments reiterated the importance of ensuring orderly and safe migration processes.
