The United States prepares for $5,000 stimulus checks

United States Government prepares to distribute $5,000 stimulus checks. We explain who will be eligible to receive them.

American citizens could soon receive a $5,000 stimulus check, as confirmed by the administration of President Donald Trump.

The proposal, promoted by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and supported by high-ranking officials, seeks to return part of the money saved from the public spending cuts directly to the taxpayers.

The plan consists of distributing 20% of the funds saved from the elimination of agencies and the reduction of federal employees to citizens in the form of a one-time check of $5,000 per household.

Although approval from Congress is still pending, President Trump has expressed his interest in having the measure implemented as soon as possible.

“We are studying the possibility of returning part of the savings directly to Americans, who have worked hard and deserve to benefit from a more efficient government,” Trump stated at a recent economic summit in Miami.

The White House has indicated that this cash injection would be a way to stimulate the economy and relieve households affected by inflation.

The initiative already has the backing of Elon Musk, government advisor and key figure in the restructuring of public spending. Musk has indicated on social media that he is in talks with the administration to finalize the delivery of these payments.

How the idea of the $5,000 stimulus check came about

The concept of these payments arose from a proposal by James Fishback, CEO of the investment firm Azoria, who suggested that a portion of the savings generated by DOGE be returned directly to taxpayers.

According to their calculation, if the department meets its goal of saving 2 trillion in public spending, 20% of that amount would translate into $5,000 checks for approximately 78 million households.

Money originally belongs to the citizens. If the government is achieving these savings, why not return some of it to those who pay taxes?" Fishback said in a post on X (formerly Twitter). His proposal was well received by Musk, who responded with a message: "I'll talk to the president about it.

Obstacles in Congress and economic concerns

Despite the enthusiasm generated by the possible distribution of checks, the measure faces resistance in Congress, especially among the more conservative Republicans.

The Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, has expressed doubts about the idea, arguing that funds should first be allocated to deficit reduction.

“Although politically it would be a popular measure, our priority must be to pay the national debt,” Johnson said at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC).

Other legislators, such as Congresswoman Celeste Maloy (R-UT), have expressed concern about the possible inflationary impact of the payments.

Every time the government hands out cash, there is a risk of generating inflation," explained Maloy.

If we really want to help the economy, the best thing is for those savings to be used to clean up public accounts.

Citizen support and possible payment dates

Despite the questions in Congress, polls show broad support among citizens for the distribution of these checks.

If this check really comes through, it would be a much-needed relief," said Carlos Ramírez, a construction worker in Texas.

What will happen with the stimulus checks?

The future of the $5,000 checks will depend on negotiations in Congress and the development of DOGE's savings plan.

Although the proposal has generated expectations, there are still legislative and economic obstacles that could delay its execution or even modify the final amount of the payments.

However, the support of President Trump and influential figures like Elon Musk suggests that the idea will remain on the political agenda in the coming months.

Para millones de estadounidenses, la esperanza de recibir este dinero sigue latente, y las próximas decisiones del Congreso serán clave para definir si este estímulo económico se convierte en una realidad.
